- 3M reached a broad resolution of PFAS personal injury litigation.
- The payment structure is spread over nine years and includes a pause in 2027.
- The company said the settlement charge will not change its previously issued 2026 guidance.
3M said on November 3 that it had reached a broad resolution of PFAS-related personal injury claims in the AFFF multidistrict litigation and related cases. The company said the settlement substantially reduces litigation uncertainty while leaving its previously issued 2026 guidance unchanged.
According to the 3M News Center, the agreement covers approximately 99 percent of current personal injury claims inside and outside the AFFF litigation in federal court in South Carolina. Eligible plaintiffs number between 115,000 and 120,000.
Cash timing limits near-term pressure
3M will make a 50 million US dollar payment in 2026 and no payment in 2027. Around 20 percent of the payments are due in the final two years of the nine-year schedule, while a 680 million US dollar reserve addresses remaining and future personal injury claims. The agreement is not an admission of liability, and 3M said it may continue defending claims if settlement conditions are not fulfilled.
The company will record a 5.8 billion US dollar pre-tax charge in the fourth quarter of 2026. 3M said the charge will be treated as a special item in adjusted results and will not change its previously issued 2026 guidance. The settlement therefore removes a major legal overhang but adds a substantial reported earnings burden.
3M stock traded at 167.78 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 15:32 CET on Wednesday, November 4, 6.70 percent above the Xetra close of Tuesday, November 3. The real-time quote of 3M stock reflects the current European listing.
