Adobe faces a sharper December test

  • Citi expects weaker annual recurring revenue growth as Adobe prioritizes AI-led user expansion over price increases.
  • The December 9 earnings release will show whether Firefly and other AI products can support paid subscription growth.
  • A leadership transition and vacancies in key roles raise execution pressure around the Creative business.

Adobe faces a sharper growth test after Citi cut its annual recurring revenue forecasts and warned that the software company may need a weaker fiscal 2027 outlook. The new estimates add a more specific risk marker to the debate ahead of Adobe's fourth-quarter report.

Citi lowers recurring-revenue expectations

In a report dated Wednesday, November 4, Citi downgraded Adobe to Sell from Neutral and cut its price target to USD 207 from USD 250. Yahoo Finance reported that Citi reduced its net new ARR estimates by about USD 470 million for fiscal 2027 and USD 500 million for fiscal 2028, to USD 1.5 billion and USD 1.35 billion.

Citi now sees total ARR growth of 5.3 percent in fiscal 2027 and 4.5 percent in fiscal 2028, 200 to 300 basis points below current Street estimates. The bank also lowered its fiscal 2027 non-GAAP gross-margin forecast by 70 basis points, citing AI inference costs that have not yet been fully monetized.

Leadership change raises execution risk

Incoming chief executive Anil Chakravarthy is scheduled to take over on December 1 while the CFO and head of Digital Media positions remain vacant, according to Citi's assessment. The bank expects Adobe to put more emphasis on monthly active users and lower-priced AI and Firefly offerings rather than relying mainly on Creative Cloud price increases.

That strategy could broaden usage but weaken near-term recurring-revenue growth and pricing power. Investors will therefore focus on whether higher AI engagement converts into paid subscriptions without putting sustained pressure on margins.

Adobe stock heads toward earnings

Adobe plans to release fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 results after the US market close on Wednesday, December 9. The outlook for fiscal 2027, Creative performance and the conversion of AI usage into subscription revenue will be the central investor tests.
