AIA Group stock faces softer Q3 before September recovery accelerates

- AIA's third-quarter value of new business declined against unusually strong Hong Kong and mainland China comparisons.
- September growth exceeded 25 percent year on year, while nine-month value of new business rose 5 percent.
- Management expects stronger fourth-quarter momentum and says it expects to exceed its operating-profit growth target.
AIA Group reported a weaker third quarter on October 30, 2026, as value of new business (VONB) faced exceptionally strong comparisons in Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland. The company's official third-quarter announcement said VONB fell 5 percent year on year to US$1.415 billion on a constant exchange rate basis.
The decline was concentrated in the two markets that had produced unusually strong sales a year earlier. VONB fell 3 percent in Hong Kong and 33 percent in the Chinese Mainland. AIA attributed the mainland comparison primarily to accelerated customer purchases ahead of industry-wide repricing on September 1, 2025, while Hong Kong was affected by exceptional sales in July 2025.
September changes the quarterly picture
The headline decline was partly offset by a sharp improvement late in the quarter. Group VONB grew by more than 25 percent year on year in September, according to AIA. In Hong Kong, VONB increased 20 percent across August and September combined, while mainland agency VONB returned to strong growth in September.
Outside Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland, VONB rose 18 percent. Singapore delivered 22 percent growth, Malaysia increased 10 percent and Thailand gained 9 percent. VONB in other markets advanced 14 percent, led by India, Taiwan and Vietnam. The regional mix gives investors a counterweight to the weaker performance in AIA's two largest affected markets.
Margins and nine-month performance
For the first nine months of 2026, VONB rose 5 percent to US$4.627 billion. The VONB margin increased by 5.3 percentage points to 63.5 percent in the third quarter, helped by product and channel mix in the Chinese Mainland. Annualised new premiums fell 13 percent to US$2.237 billion, while total weighted premium income increased 7 percent to US$12.892 billion.
The figures suggest that sales volume and expected profitability are moving in different directions. AIA generated a higher margin despite lower quarterly VONB, a combination that may support earnings quality if the September recovery continues. The company also said agency fundamentals improved, with more active agents, recruits and leaders year on year.
Management points to stronger fourth quarter
Group Chief Executive and President Lee Yuan Siong said demand for protection, health, savings and retirement products remained strong. He said AIA entered the fourth quarter with strong momentum and expected the normalization of comparative effects to support performance.
AIA reiterated that it expects to exceed its target of 9 percent to 11 percent compound annual growth in operating profit after tax per share from 2023 through 2026. That outlook remains management guidance rather than a reported result, leaving fourth-quarter execution and the durability of mainland recovery as the next major investor focus.
