- Boeing expects China's commercial fleet to more than double over the next 20 years.
- Single-aisle aircraft are projected to account for 78 percent of deliveries through 2045.
- The forecast points to long-term demand, while execution and conversion into orders remain key investor issues.
Boeing said on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, that China's commercial aircraft fleet could more than double over the next 20 years. The forecast, presented in Beijing as part of Boeing's 2026 China Commercial Market Outlook, points to demand for 9,240 new aircraft through 2045. The company said the fleet could exceed 9,800 airplanes by then.
The projection is based on expected annual passenger traffic growth of 5 percent, supported by an expanding middle class, more visa-free travel and continued investment in aviation infrastructure. Boeing Vice President of Commercial Marketing Darren Hulst said the outlook shows strong demand as China's passenger traffic grows faster than the global market.
Single-aisle jets lead demand
Single-aisle aircraft account for the largest part of Boeing's forecast. Chinese carriers are expected to take delivery of more than 7,200 single-aisle airplanes, or 78 percent of the projected total, to serve domestic and regional routes in China and the wider Asia-Pacific region.
Boeing sees more than 1,400 widebody aircraft required for long-haul traffic linking China with Europe, the Americas, Africa and the Middle East. The forecast also includes 560 production and converted freighters as e-commerce and industrial activity support air cargo demand. Of the total projected deliveries, 42 percent would replace older aircraft rather than expand the fleet.
The outlook also includes a services opportunity. Boeing expects airlines in China to invest 875 billion US dollars over two decades in digital services, maintenance and training. The aviation sector could require 425,000 new pilots, technicians and cabin crew, increasing the potential market for Boeing's training and support activities.
Demand visibility meets execution risk
For investors, the forecast strengthens the long-term demand backdrop for Boeing's commercial aircraft and services businesses, but it is not a commitment from airlines to place orders. Actual deliveries will depend on airline finances, regulatory conditions, production capacity and Boeing's ability to execute on aircraft programs and support services. Boeing itself cautioned that forward-looking projections can differ materially from future results.
