BP reported a sharp improvement in third-quarter performance on October 30, as stronger refining margins and gas and marketing trading lifted earnings. The company said its underlying replacement-cost profit reached 8.458 billion US dollars, compared with 5.732 billion US dollars in the second quarter and 2.210 billion US dollars a year earlier, according to its third-quarter results release.

Balance sheet takes priority

Reported profit attributable to BP shareholders was 4.696 billion US dollars, up from 3.911 billion US dollars in the second quarter. BP said the reported result included a 1.598 billion US dollar inventory holding gain and 5.360 billion US dollars of net adverse adjusting items, including 4.0 billion US dollars of post-tax impairments. Those adjustments explain why the reported and underlying measures differ materially.

Operating cash flow reached 14.829 billion US dollars, compared with 10.858 billion US dollars in the previous quarter. Net debt fell by 8.381 billion US dollars to 13.870 billion US dollars at the end of September, from 22.251 billion US dollars at the end of June. BP said the reduction reflected stronger cash generation, partly offset by the redemption of 1.0 billion US dollars of perpetual hybrid securities.

Chief Executive Meg O'Neill said the group had delivered its net debt and structural cost-reduction targets, but also described the balance sheet as still too leveraged. BP intends to direct excess cash flow toward its remaining Deepwater Horizon liabilities while continuing to support its dividend and disciplined investment.

Investors await the next blueprint

Operational indicators also improved. Upstream plant reliability rose to 95.3 percent from 92.4 percent in the second quarter, while refining availability increased to 96.5 percent from 94.7 percent. Reported production held at 2.2 million barrels of oil equivalent per day.

The customers and products segment produced underlying profit before interest and tax of 6.9 billion US dollars, compared with 5.0 billion US dollars in the second quarter. BP attributed the increase mainly to significantly higher realized refining margins, stronger commercial optimization and lower turnaround and maintenance activity.
