BP stock traded at 7.59 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 09:44:36 CET on Friday, October 30, 2026. BP reported underlying replacement cost profit of USD 8.5 billion for the third quarter, while reported profit attributable to shareholders reached USD 4.7 billion. The results were released on Friday for the July-to-September period in BP's third-quarter results.
Profit improves as refining margins rise
Underlying replacement cost profit increased from USD 5.7 billion in the second quarter and USD 2.2 billion in the third quarter of 2025. BP attributed the sequential improvement mainly to significantly higher realized refining margins and stronger gas and marketing trading. The underlying effective tax rate fell to 28 percent from 34 percent in the previous quarter.
The reported result was reduced by USD 4.0 billion of post-tax impairments, primarily linked to transition businesses including Lightsource bp and offshore wind. Inventory holding gains of USD 1.6 billion and other adjusting items also separated the reported result from BP's underlying performance. For investors, the figures show a stronger operating quarter but also underline the capital intensity and execution risk of the portfolio transition.
Cash generation cuts net debt
Operating cash flow reached USD 14.8 billion, up from USD 10.9 billion in the second quarter and USD 7.8 billion a year earlier. Net debt fell to USD 13.9 billion from USD 22.3 billion at the end of June. BP said the reduction reflected stronger cash generation, partly offset by the redemption of USD 1.0 billion of perpetual hybrid securities.
Operational indicators also improved in several areas. Upstream plant reliability rose to 95.3 percent from 92.4 percent in the second quarter, while refining availability increased to 96.5 percent from 94.7 percent. Refinery throughput declined to 1.396 million barrels per day after the disposal of the Gelsenkirchen refinery, but BP said higher margins, stronger commercial optimization and lower maintenance activity supported the products business.
Portfolio actions shape the outlook
Chief executive Meg O'Neill said BP's integrated model benefited from a higher-price, higher-margin environment and continued volatility in energy markets. Management said the company had delivered its net debt and structural cost reduction targets and would continue directing excess cash toward the balance sheet, the dividend and disciplined investment.
BP is simplifying its portfolio through asset sales and partnerships. The company completed the Gelsenkirchen disposal, agreed to sell its Austrian mobility and convenience business and put its North Sea and Archaea businesses on the market. The planned Castrol divestment is expected to provide a further USD 6 billion for balance-sheet strengthening once completed.
For 2026, BP expects divestment and other proceeds of around USD 8 billion, including the anticipated Castrol proceeds. The company also raised its expected underlying effective tax rate range to 31 to 34 percent and continues to expect capital expenditure of USD 13.5 billion to USD 14.0 billion.
BP plans to set out its next strategy and outlook update on December 15, including longer-term plans, capital priorities and performance targets. Its investor calendar also lists a question-and-answer session with the chief executive and chief financial officer for Tuesday, November 4.
