BSE Sensex closes 0.95 percent higher ahead of RBI decision

India Today reported that the index opened at 72,508.05 points and finished at 73,067.81 points.
Drivers of the day
Buying in banks and financial stocks provided the main support. Kotak Mahindra Bank rose 3.59 percent after reporting growth in advances and deposits, while Axis Bank gained 2.01 percent after its quarterly business update. Moneycontrol also cited easing crude prices, positive global cues and broad-based buying.
Trent was the strongest Sensex constituent, surging 12.78 percent after projecting a 23 percent year-on-year increase in standalone revenue for the September quarter. The update supported buying in consumer-facing shares. Upstox said Trent's September-quarter revenue was projected at INR 5,788 crore, while Kotak Mahindra Bank reported a 24.7 percent year-on-year rise in net advances.
Market breadth
The advance was broad across the market. At the close, 2,685 shares advanced, 1,495 declined and 197 were unchanged, according to Moneycontrol. Tech Mahindra, Coal India, Max Healthcare, ITC and Infosys were among the weaker stocks.
What is next
The next market catalyst is the Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee decision on Wednesday, October 7, at 10:00 a.m. IST. Governor Sanjay Malhotra is scheduled to hold a press conference at 12:00 p.m. IST. Business Standard said the committee is expected to consider the repo rate and its policy stance after meeting from October 5 to October 7.
