Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce announced on October 30, 2026, that Bill Morneau will become chair of its board on January 1, 2027. The announcement, carried by Placera from Canada NewsWire, said he will succeed Katharine B. Stevenson.
Stevenson will retire from the board on December 31, 2026, after six years as chair and 10 years as an independent director. The change is therefore scheduled for the start of 2027 rather than an immediate management transition.
Morneau brings board and policy experience
Morneau has been an independent CIBC director since 2022. He currently chairs the board's Corporate Governance Committee, previously chaired its Technology Committee and also serves as a director on CIBC's U.S. board.
The release also highlighted Morneau's experience as Canada's finance minister and as a business leader. For investors, the appointment places an experienced internal director at the center of CIBC's board oversight while leaving the bank's announced client-focused growth strategy unchanged.
