- Management expects shareholder returns to remain strong in 2027 if free cash flow stays resilient.
- The Horizon turnaround finished seven days early, supporting higher fourth-quarter output.
- Record thermal and conventional liquids production strengthened the operating backdrop.
Canadian Natural Resources shifted investor attention from its third-quarter earnings to the durability of its capital-return plan after management said on Thursday, November 5, that buybacks could continue at a similar pace into 2027 if free cash flow remains strong. The comment adds a forward-looking detail to the company's plan to direct 100% of free cash flow to repurchases, subject to market conditions.
Management extends buyback signal
On the earnings call, President Scott Stauth said the planned monthly repurchase pace should not be viewed as a two-month trial. He expects the company to continue at a similar rate into the new year while commodity prices and free cash flow remain supportive. The full transcript is available from Yahoo Finance.
Canadian Natural reached its CAD 13 billion net debt target earlier than expected, ending the quarter at CAD 12.1 billion. The company targets CAD 800 million of share repurchases in each of November and December, while management said the pace could change if commodity prices shift materially.
Horizon turnaround supports output
The Horizon oil sands turnaround was completed in 28 days, seven days ahead of schedule. Management expects the earlier completion to add 23,000 barrels per day of high-margin synthetic crude production in the fourth quarter and has extended the planned interval between turnarounds from two years to three years.
Canadian Natural also reported record quarterly thermal in situ production of approximately 300,000 barrels per day and record North American conventional liquids production of approximately 358,000 barrels per day. Management expects a strong fourth quarter, supported by oil sands mining and upgrading, thermal operations and execution across its portfolio.
