- Third-quarter revenue rose 15 percent year over year to CAD 4.219 billion.
- Higher fuel costs pushed the core adjusted operating ratio to 61.9 percent.
- The EVR agreement takes effect on January 1, 2027 and expands coal transport toward Vancouver.
Canadian Pacific Kansas City announced on October 28, 2026 that it had signed a new five-year rail service agreement with Elk Valley Resources. The company release says the deal expands CPKC's share of EVR's steelmaking coal movements to the West Coast.
New agreement adds volume potential
Under the agreement, CPKC will transport coal from EVR's four British Columbia mines to Westshore Terminals and Neptune Terminals in Vancouver. The arrangement is effective January 1, 2027. CPKC describes EVR as its largest coal customer and says the expanded relationship should increase the volume moving on its network.
This is the main addition to the latest earnings picture: it provides a concrete commercial development beyond the reported quarter, although the announcement does not disclose a shipment or revenue target. For investors, the agreement supports the longer-term volume case while execution, commodity demand and fuel costs remain important variables.
Growth came with cost pressure
In its third-quarter results, CPKC reported revenue of CAD 4.219 billion, up 15 percent from the prior-year quarter. Reported diluted earnings per share rose 3 percent to CAD 1.04, while core adjusted diluted earnings per share increased 16 percent to CAD 1.28. Revenue ton-miles advanced 6 percent.
The cost picture was less favorable. The reported operating ratio increased to 64.8 percent and the core adjusted operating ratio to 61.9 percent. CPKC said higher fuel prices affected those ratios by 170 and 190 basis points, respectively.
