Caterpillar reported a stronger third quarter on October 29, with record sales, wider margins and strong order rates. The company also kept its full-year growth outlook, while a more moderate fourth quarter puts execution and cost control at the center of the investor debate.

In its third-quarter results release, Caterpillar said sales and revenues increased 17% year over year to USD 20.7 billion. Higher sales volume contributed USD 2.2 billion, while favorable price realization added USD 663 million.

Margins and backlog support the case

Operating profit margin widened to 20.4% from 17.3% a year earlier. Adjusted operating profit margin, excluding restructuring costs, reached 20.6%, while adjusted profit per share rose to USD 7.20 from USD 4.95.

Management cited strong order rates and a record backlog across its end markets. Enterprise operating cash flow reached USD 4.4 billion, and Caterpillar deployed USD 2.0 billion through share repurchases and dividends during the quarter.

Execution remains the next test

The stronger operating picture does not remove the pressure on conversion. Investors must assess how quickly orders become revenue while Caterpillar manages freight, tariffs and capacity investments. Management continues to expect full-year 2026 sales and revenues to grow in the mid- to high-teens range, but fourth-quarter growth is expected to be moderate.
