Cathay Financial is moving toward an "Agent First" phase after unveiling AI-agent pilots at its technology conference on September 15, 2026. The pilots cover project management, technology governance and legal contract review, according to a AAP report carrying the PRNewswire release.

AI agents target internal workflows

Cathay Financial Holdings said the so-called digital colleagues are built on its GAIA 2.0 generative-AI framework, introduced in 2025. The systems receive defined roles and operating boundaries and can use enterprise knowledge and tools to carry out assigned tasks.

The initial applications focus on internal processes rather than customer-facing products. Cathay United Bank has also established AI Scrum and AI software-development teams for requirements organization, development, testing and document preparation.

Controls remain central to scaling

Human review remains in place for major decisions, rule validation and exceptional cases. Cathay said its framework includes identity and access controls, enterprise-knowledge permissions, system integration safeguards, cybersecurity monitoring and audit trails.

The conference also covered virtual-asset custody, stablecoins, AI-agent payments and autonomous finance. Cathay said it would continue exploring opportunities in asset management and wealth management as its digital capabilities develop.

Investment case depends on execution

For investors, the announcement signals continued investment in technology and process automation, but it does not establish a financial contribution from the pilots. Their significance will depend on whether Cathay can expand the workflows safely, generate measurable productivity gains and manage regulatory and cybersecurity risks.

The conference drew nearly 7,000 registrations, while combined online and in-person concurrent viewership exceeded 3,500. The next investor-relevant milestones are broader deployment, evidence of operating benefits and any effect on costs or service quality.
