- Chubb delivered record nine-month core operating income, supported by underwriting, investment and life insurance results.
- Higher catastrophe losses and weaker North America Commercial premiums contrasted with stronger overseas and personal-lines growth.
- The insurer's latest results keep underwriting discipline and premium expansion central to the investment debate.
Chubb Limited's third-quarter results combine record nine-month profitability with uneven premium growth. The company reported the figures for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, in its October 20 earnings release.
Core operating income reached 2.98 billion US dollars in the quarter, or 7.66 US dollars per share. For the first nine months, the measure rose 21 percent to a record 8.60 billion US dollars, while core operating earnings per share increased 24.5 percent to 21.94 US dollars. These are core operating figures, a non-GAAP measure that excludes specified items from net income.
Underwriting remains the key test
Property and casualty underwriting income fell 8.8 percent year over year to 2.06 billion US dollars, with the combined ratio moving to 84.1 percent from 81.8 percent. Catastrophe losses rose to 705 million US dollars from 285 million US dollars a year earlier, making the reported comparison less favorable despite strong underlying profitability.
Premium trends were mixed. Consolidated net premiums written increased 1.9 percent to 15.14 billion US dollars. North America Commercial premiums declined 2.7 percent, while North America Personal rose 5.3 percent and Overseas General gained 6.7 percent. Life Insurance premiums increased 1.4 percent, and segment income advanced 11.4 percent to 369 million US dollars.
