- CATL increased non-China EV battery usage 46.7% year on year in the first nine months of 2026.
- Its market share outside China rose to 33.7%, while Chinese manufacturers continued to gain ground.
- Trial production has started at CATL's Debrecen plant, supporting its European supply strategy.
Contemporary Amperex Technology is extending its lead in electric-vehicle batteries beyond China, according to a report published Wednesday, November 4, by The Herald Business. The report cited SNE Research figures for the first nine months of 2026 and highlighted stronger overseas growth by Chinese suppliers.
Overseas battery share rises
CATL recorded 143.7 gigawatt-hours of battery usage in markets outside China, up 46.7 percent from a year earlier. Its share of the non-China market increased from 28.6 percent to 33.7 percent as total battery usage in those markets rose 24.7 percent to about 426.7 gigawatt-hours.
Demand growth was broad geographically. Battery usage in Europe increased 35.4 percent to 96.8 gigawatt-hours, while usage in Asia more than doubled to 27.1 gigawatt-hours. The figures point to expanding opportunities beyond CATL's domestic market, although supplier competition remains intense.
European production moves forward
CATL began trial production on September 22 at the first two lines of its Debrecen plant in Hungary. The first phase is planned at 34 gigawatt-hours, with Mercedes-Benz and BMW among the European customers identified in the report.
Local production could help CATL serve European demand while addressing regional supply-chain requirements. The broader market is also becoming more competitive: BYD's non-China share rose to 10.8 percent, while the combined share of South Korea's three leading battery makers fell to 26.5 percent.
For investors, the overseas figures provide a counterweight to pressure in China's electric-vehicle market. CATL's expansion outside China is strengthening its geographic reach, but future returns will depend on battery pricing, utilization and the pace at which European production ramps up.
China's battery industry is developing against a wider electric-vehicle and industrial backdrop covered in the latest Shanghai Composite market reports.
