- Third-quarter adjusted EBIT rose despite lower sales after the disposal of the Original Equipment Solutions business.
- Continental raised its 2026 adjusted EBIT margin and free cash flow targets for continuing operations.
- Higher raw-material costs are expected to pressure fourth-quarter earnings.
Continental raised its 2026 financial outlook on Wednesday, November 4, after a stronger-than-expected third quarter in its tire business. The Hanover-based group lifted its targets for adjusted operating profitability and free cash flow, while warning that higher raw-material costs will weigh more heavily on fourth-quarter earnings. The company outlined the change on its Q3 2026 results page.
Profitability improves despite lower sales
Adjusted EBIT increased 6.7 percent to 514 million euros from 482 million euros a year earlier. The adjusted EBIT margin widened to 14.9 percent from 13.9 percent. Sales, however, fell to 3.45 billion euros from 3.90 billion euros, mainly because Continental sold its Original Equipment Solutions business in February. Organic sales declined 1.5 percent.
Net income attributable to shareholders reached 349 million euros, compared with a loss of 756 million euros in the prior-year quarter. The comparison benefits from special effects recorded in the previous year, including costs linked to the Aumovio spin-off and preparations for the OESL disposal. Adjusted free cash flow was 31 million euros, down from 99 million euros a year earlier.
Higher targets and a tougher final quarter
For continuing operations, Continental now expects a 2026 adjusted EBIT margin of 13.4 to 14.0 percent, up from its previous range of 12.0 to 13.5 percent. Adjusted free cash flow guidance increased to 1.0 billion to 1.3 billion euros from 700 million to 1.1 billion euros. The sales outlook was narrowed to 13.5 billion to 13.9 billion euros from 13.2 billion to 14.2 billion euros.
Management attributed the upgrade to operational execution, stronger earnings and better visibility on working capital rather than to a broad recovery in end markets. The tire business benefited from premium products, pricing measures and lower tariff costs. Continental said sales in the Americas were hurt by weak replacement markets, while Europe delivered particularly strong results.
Chief Financial Officer Roland Welzbacher said higher raw-material prices are increasingly affecting earnings and will have a greater impact in the fourth quarter. Investing.com, citing company comments and market analysis, reported that ContiTech's separate outlook was reduced to sales of 4.2 billion to 4.4 billion euros and an adjusted EBIT margin of 6.5 to 7.5 percent. The planned sale of ContiTech and the subsequent capital allocation remain important medium-term factors for the equity story.
