Duke Energy reported stronger third-quarter results on Thursday, November 5, 2026, as growth at its electric utilities and infrastructure business offset higher depreciation and interest costs. Chief Executive Officer Harry Sideris said adjusted earnings per share reached $1.99, up from $1.81 a year earlier, during the company's earnings call hosted at 10 a.m. Eastern time. The company also narrowed its full-year adjusted earnings outlook to $6.70-$6.80 per share and said it expects to finish near the upper end of the range. The results announcement is available from Duke Energy investor relations.

Electric utilities lead earnings growth

Chief Financial Officer Brian Savoy said electric utilities and infrastructure contributed $0.20 of year-over-year earnings growth. Rate cases, riders, higher sales volumes and hot summer weather supported the quarter, while higher depreciation, interest expense and minority-interest effects at Duke Energy Florida reduced the benefit.

Management said third-quarter demand increased 2%, the strongest quarterly growth since 2022. Residential customer growth was nearly 2%, while advanced manufacturing demand began to ramp. Duke Energy continues to forecast 3% to 4% load growth through the remainder of its five-year plan, with contracted data-center demand expected to begin coming online next year.

Capital plan supports higher demand

Sideris said the company is executing a $103 billion capital plan and sees another $5 billion to $10 billion of potential generation and transmission investment as additional large-load contracts are finalized, particularly in Indiana and Florida. Duke Energy plans to add 16 gigawatts of generation capacity by 2031. Management said capital deployment is running at $1.5 billion per month and is expected to rise to $2 billion per month in 2027.

The company said 5.2 gigawatts of data centers under construction remain scheduled to begin taking energy in the second half of 2027 and into 2028. Duke Energy also said it remains confident in converting its 15.4-gigawatt late-stage pipeline into electric service agreements by the first half of 2027, although management described negotiations as complex and slower than initially expected.

Regulation remains a central risk

North Carolina rate-case settlements are expected to receive orders by mid-November, with new rates taking effect in January 2027. Duke Energy also expects a large-load tariff order in the state. In Florida, the commission requested changes to the company's large-load tariff, and management said Duke Energy plans to refile while continuing customer discussions.

The company reaffirmed its target of 5% to 7% long-term earnings-per-share growth through 2030 and expects to reach the upper half of that range beginning in 2028. Management also said it remains on track for a 14.5% FFO-to-debt ratio in 2026. The outlook remains supported by customer growth and infrastructure recovery, but normal weather, higher financing costs and regulatory execution will shape the next stages of earnings growth.
