Ecolab reported a stronger third quarter on October 27, with sales growth accelerating and profitability improving despite acquisition-related costs. The results and outlook were detailed in an Ecolab investor release.

Ecolab's reported third-quarter sales increased 13 percent to USD 4.69 billion from USD 4.17 billion a year earlier. Organic sales growth accelerated to 7 percent, comprising 2 percent volume growth and 5 percent pricing growth. Adjusted operating income rose 14 percent to USD 893.4 million, while organic operating income increased 11 percent.

Margins improve despite acquisition costs

Organic operating income margin reached 19.6 percent, up 70 basis points from the prior-year quarter. Reported operating income margin was 17.3 percent. Ecolab said stronger pricing and productivity offset higher commodity costs, allowing organic gross margin to remain stable at 44.9 percent. Reported gross margin was 44.1 percent after the impact of recent acquisitions.

Adjusted diluted earnings per share increased 5 percent to USD 2.18, while reported diluted earnings per share fell 5 percent to USD 1.95. The adjusted result included an approximate 10 percent headwind from amortization and financing costs linked to the CoolIT acquisition. Net interest expense rose to USD 124.8 million from USD 55.3 million in the prior-year quarter as acquisition financing affected the comparison.

Global Water was a major growth driver, with sales up 21 percent in public currency to USD 2.48 billion. Within the segment, Global High-Tech organic sales increased 63 percent, reflecting demand from microelectronics and data centers. Life Sciences sales rose 16 percent in public currency, while organic operating income margin improved to 23.3 percent.

2026 guidance remains intact

Ecolab expects full-year 2026 adjusted diluted earnings per share of USD 8.10 to USD 8.20, representing growth of 8 percent to 9 percent. The range includes an estimated six-percentage-point short-term headwind from CoolIT-related amortization and financing costs. The company also anticipates quantifiable 2026 special charges of USD 0.83 per share, principally for restructuring and acquisition integration.

For the fourth quarter, management projects reported sales growth of 12 percent to 14 percent, organic sales growth of 6 percent to 7 percent and adjusted diluted earnings per share of USD 2.13 to USD 2.23. Adjusted operating income margin is expected to reach about 19 percent, with organic operating income margin near 20 percent.

Chief Executive Christophe Beck said Ecolab enters 2027 with momentum. Management expects organic sales growth at the upper end of its 5 percent to 7 percent target range and an adjusted operating income margin of 20 percent. Adjusted earnings growth is expected to accelerate in the second half of 2027 as the company moves beyond the comparison effects of recent acquisitions.
