Energy Transfer stock is in focus after Energy Transfer Interstate Holdings (ETIH) launched a binding open season for the proposed South Mississippi Project on October 28, according to Pipeline & Gas Journal.

ETIH seeks capacity commitments

The proposed pipeline would extend about 215 miles from a receipt point in Richland Parish, Louisiana, to a delivery point in the George County area of Mississippi. The plan calls for either 42-inch or 36-inch pipe, together with compression and metering facilities, to provide additional firm natural gas transportation capacity in southern Mississippi.

The capacity process began at 9 a.m. Central Time on October 28 and is scheduled to close at 5 p.m. Central Time on November 25. ETIH said it has secured binding commitments from anchor shippers. Those commitments would not be subject to proration and would include extension rights, while other capacity offers could be prorated and would not include those rights.

Regulatory process remains ahead

ETIH plans to seek authorization from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. The company intends to place most of the expansion alongside existing infrastructure, which could reduce impacts on landowners and communities and simplify the regulatory review.

ETIH expects the project to be available on or before March 1, 2030. After the open season closes, it will assess the bids and decide whether to proceed. Any capacity awards would be based on the highest net present value of reservation charges from acceptable offers, within the capacity ultimately selected for construction.

For investors, the announcement points to a potential long-term transportation expansion, but construction and commercial timing remain subject to the bidding outcome and regulatory authorization.
