- HSBC UK added UK shares and ETFs to its mobile and online investment offering.
- HSBC plans a Hong Kong institute focused on artificial intelligence, fraud detection and emerging technologies.
- Third-quarter results supported the bank's 2026 targets, dividend policy and further buyback plans.
HSBC stock enters the new week with two business developments beyond its recent earnings focus. On Monday, November 2, HSBC UK added UK shares and exchange-traded funds to its mobile app and online banking channels, while HSBC also announced plans for a global AI and Emerging Technology Institute in Hong Kong.
HSBC UK said customers can place, track, review and cancel market or limit orders through its digital channels. The launch also adds watchlists, heatmaps, ETF screening and corporate-event notifications. New eligible investment customers who deposit at least GBP 500 can receive a GBP 50 cash reward, according to HSBC UK.
Technology investment broadens the story
The Hong Kong institute is expected to begin operations in early 2027. Its initial work will cover AI training, AI safety, fraud detection, engineering optimisation, post-quantum cryptography and blockchain. Hong Kong University of Science and Technology will serve as the anchor academic partner, HSBC said in its Hong Kong announcement.
The initiatives add operating and technology angles to the financial picture from the third quarter. In its October 27 release, HSBC reported constant-currency revenue excluding notable items of USD 18.7 billion and profit before tax excluding notable items of USD 10.0 billion. The bank retained its medium-term targets, including a return on tangible equity of at least 17 percent and revenue growth rising to 5 percent by 2028, as set out by HSBC.
HSBC also approved a third interim dividend of 10 US cents per share and said it intended to initiate a share buyback of up to USD 1 billion. Those distributions remain relevant for investors assessing the balance between capital returns, technology spending and growth investment.
