- Reported third-quarter profit before tax benefited materially from the non-recurrence of prior-year legal provisions.
- Management retained its medium-term return, payout and cost-growth targets.
- The CET1 ratio was below the bank's medium-term operating range at quarter-end.
HSBC Holdings published its third-quarter 2026 results on 27 October. The bank reported constant-currency revenue excluding notable items of USD 18.7 billion, up 5 percent year on year, while profit before tax on the same basis rose 10 percent to USD 10.0 billion, according to the HSBC earnings release.
Underlying performance remains broad
Reported profit before tax increased 32 percent to USD 9.6 billion. HSBC said the comparison benefited from the non-recurrence of USD 1.4 billion in legal provisions booked in the third quarter of 2025. Banking net interest income increased by USD 0.6 billion to USD 11.7 billion, while expected credit losses fell 17 percent to USD 0.8 billion.
The release also provides additional nine-month detail compared with the previous company update. Profit before tax reached USD 29.2 billion and revenue USD 56.4 billion, while annualised return on average tangible equity excluding notable items was 18.8 percent. Banking net interest income for the first nine months was USD 34.6 billion.
Targets and capital remain in focus
HSBC retained its expectation for 2026 banking net interest income of at least USD 46 billion and continues to target a return on tangible equity of 17 percent or better through 2028, excluding notable items. The bank also maintained its 50 percent payout-ratio target and expects operating expenses to grow by approximately 1 percent in 2026 on a target basis.
The board approved a third interim dividend of USD 0.10 per share and HSBC intends to initiate a further share buyback of up to USD 1 billion. Management expects the final Basel 3.1 rules to benefit the group CET1 ratio by 40 to 50 basis points from 1 January 2027, although the quarter-end CET1 ratio was 13.9 percent against a medium-term target range of 14 to 14.5 percent.
