Imperial Oil stock follows a record third-quarter profit as higher commodity prices and refining margins offset lower production. Kearl remains the key risk.

What Imperial's Results Mean

  • Imperial delivered record quarterly earnings as stronger commodity prices and downstream margins outweighed lower production.
  • Kearl output was hit by a third-party pipeline outage, prompting a lower full-year production target.
  • Shareholder returns and the Strathcona renewable diesel project remain central to the investment case.

Imperial Oil reported record third-quarter net income of 2.454 billion Canadian dollars on October 30, as stronger commodity prices and downstream performance offset lower upstream production. The company's official release said diluted earnings reached 5.11 Canadian dollars per share, compared with 539 million Canadian dollars, or 1.07 Canadian dollars per share, a year earlier.

Record earnings meet operational pressure

Imperial said quarterly cash flow from operations rose to 3.228 billion Canadian dollars from 1.798 billion Canadian dollars in the year-earlier period. Cash flow excluding working capital increased to 2.957 billion Canadian dollars from 1.600 billion Canadian dollars. The 2025 comparison included 555 million Canadian dollars of unfavorable identified items, comprising impairment and restructuring charges.

Downstream earnings climbed to 1.555 billion Canadian dollars from 444 million Canadian dollars, supported by improved refining margins and product mix. Imperial said the Strathcona renewable diesel facility reached its highest canola throughput, contributing to an estimated 170 million Canadian dollars of downstream product-mix benefit during the quarter.

Production and refining remain in focus

Upstream production averaged 418,000 gross oil-equivalent barrels per day, down from 462,000 a year earlier. Kearl production averaged 282,000 gross barrels per day, including 200,000 barrels per day attributable to Imperial. A third-party pipeline outage caused a full production shutdown at Kearl for multiple days, while planned turnaround work affected Cold Lake and Syncrude.

Imperial now targets total gross Kearl production of 280,000 barrels per day for 2026, with 199,000 barrels per day attributable to the company. Refinery throughput fell to 381,000 barrels per day from 425,000, and capacity utilization declined to 88 percent from 98 percent. The company cited unplanned downtime, the pipeline outage and planned turnaround work at Sarnia.

Returns and next operating milestones

Imperial returned 2.506 billion Canadian dollars to shareholders during the quarter, including 420 million Canadian dollars in dividends and 2.086 billion Canadian dollars in share repurchases. Management said the accelerated normal course issuer bid is on pace for completion before year-end and that surplus cash could support additional shareholder returns in the new year. The company also declared a fourth-quarter dividend of 87 cents per share.
