ING Groep reported stronger third-quarter earnings on Thursday, October 29, 2026, and paired the result with a new capital-return plan. In its 3Q2026 press release, the Dutch banking group said net result increased 3.5% year-on-year to EUR 1,850 million, while return on tangible equity reached 16.3% for the quarter.

Commercial activity remained firm. ING added 259,000 mobile primary customers during the quarter, taking growth over the previous 12 months to more than 1.1 million. Net core lending increased by EUR 11.0 billion and net core deposits by EUR 12.1 billion. Fee income rose 9.3% year-on-year to EUR 1,273 million, while profit before tax climbed 5.7% to EUR 2,705 million.

Capital returns remain central

The results supported a further shareholder distribution of EUR 1.9 billion. ING said the package consists of a share buyback of up to EUR 1.65 billion and a cash payment of EUR 250 million in January. The distribution is funded from reserves outside the reported core equity tier one ratio, according to the company.

ING ended the quarter with a CET1 ratio of 13.3%, above its prevailing requirement of 11.10%. Two significant risk-transfer transactions generated EUR 3.0 billion of risk-weighted-asset relief during the quarter. Management said capital efficiency and resilient asset quality allowed the bank to reserve profits for distribution while maintaining its capital position.

Management kept the 2026 outlook unchanged. In the analyst discussion, ING indicated that its net interest income outlook of EUR 16.8 billion to EUR 17.0 billion remained valid, with the current expectation at the upper end of that range. The bank also expects to add 1 million mobile primary customers during 2026. A broader strategic update is scheduled for the Capital Markets Day on June 14, 2027.

Wholesale Banking enters a reset

ING is simplifying and refocusing Wholesale Banking to make the business easier for clients to navigate. The division delivered EUR 2.5 billion of lending growth in the quarter, EUR 9.4 billion of deposit growth and 9.4% year-on-year growth in fee income. Retail Banking contributed EUR 8.5 billion of lending growth, including a EUR 6.9 billion increase in the mortgage portfolio.

ING Groep stock traded at 28.20 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 10:03 CET on Monday, November 2, 2026. Investors will weigh the stronger operating trend and capital distribution against interest-rate volatility, risk costs and the execution demands of the wholesale-banking changes.
