- UK regulators will assess the Sky transaction's effects on media plurality and freedom of expression.
- The review covers ITV's television channels and ITVX, while ITV Studios remains outside the proposed sale.
- The CMA and Ofcom must report to the culture secretary by January 27, 2027.
UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy issued a Public Interest Intervention Notice on Wednesday, November 4, opening a formal review of Sky's proposed GBP 1.6 billion acquisition of ITV's media and entertainment arm. Sky News reported that the Competition and Markets Authority and Ofcom will examine the transaction's implications for competition, media plurality and freedom of expression.
Regulators set January deadline
The CMA and Ofcom must report to Nandy by January 27, 2027. She will then decide whether to refer the transaction to a more detailed CMA investigation. The intervention starts regulatory scrutiny; it does not by itself block the proposed sale.
Nandy also plans legislation to extend an existing public-interest consideration from broadcast television to on-demand programming. That change would bring streaming services into the assessment of programme choice and quality.
Media arm remains in focus
The proposed transaction includes ITV's terrestrial channels and ITVX. ITV Studios, the production business behind shows including I'm A Celebrity and Mr Bates Vs The Post Office, remains outside the sale. Sky and ITV have said the deal would create a stronger British media business able to compete with global streaming platforms.
