JPMorgan Chase is tightening its stance on external artificial intelligence agents that act for retail banking customers, putting account security and control at the center of the debate. CNBC reported on Sunday, November 1, that Chief Executive Jamie Dimon said the bank would block outside AI agents from operating on behalf of customers because of security risks.

The policy targets agents that could access accounts or take actions for customers, such as finding deposit products, moving money or managing other financial tasks. JPMorgan is not rejecting artificial intelligence broadly: the bank is developing its own technology while restricting outside systems that may operate with customer credentials or outside the bank's control.

Security Versus Customer Convenience

CNBC cited research from Accenture showing that 71 percent of customers would welcome an AI assistant embedded in their primary bank's mobile application. A further 65 percent of consumers were open to using a generative AI financial assistant through an AI platform or digital wallet.

The figures highlight the commercial tension facing JPMorgan. External agents could make it easier for customers to compare savings products, monitor accounts and complete routine financial tasks. At the same time, banks face risks involving fraud, identity verification, liability and the possibility that an agent performs an action beyond the customer's intent.

Accenture's banking lead Michael Abbott told CNBC that customers want convenience without losing control. The research found that 82 percent of consumers want to approve every AI action, while 79 percent want the ability to pause or stop AI activity immediately. For JPMorgan, the challenge is therefore not only whether to permit agents, but how to authenticate them and limit their permissions.

JPMorgan Chase is scheduled to present at the BancAnalysts Association of Boston Conference on Thursday, November 5, according to the company's Investor Relations page. The appearance could give investors another opportunity to assess how management views artificial intelligence, customer access and the bank's technology strategy.
