PC pressure meets AI positioning

  • Gartner linked the market contraction to higher memory and storage costs that lifted PC prices.
  • Lenovo remained the leading PC vendor despite weaker industry shipments.
  • The company is scheduled to present an AI-focused session in Madrid on November 5, ahead of its second-quarter results on November 19.

Lenovo is heading into an AI-focused Madrid session with the PC market under pressure. Gartner's preliminary third-quarter estimates showed a sharp contraction in worldwide shipments, while Lenovo remained the leading vendor despite a comparable decline in its own shipments.

According to IT Pro, Gartner counted 55.4 million PC shipments worldwide in the third quarter of 2026, down 22.4 percent from the same period a year earlier. Gartner attributed the decline to higher memory and storage costs, vendor reprioritization of scarce components and a shift toward more expensive configurations.

Component costs test demand

Gartner analyst Namrata Banerjee said rising memory costs were passed on to customers, making lower-cost devices less available. Consumers delayed replacement purchases, while businesses concentrated spending on workstations and AI PCs rather than broad-based deployments.

Lenovo's shipments also fell 22.4 percent year over year, according to the Gartner figures cited by IT Pro. The company nevertheless retained its leading position in the global PC market. For investors, the combination of market leadership and weaker volumes puts pricing, component availability and the contribution of AI-related products at the center of the outlook.

Lenovo is scheduled to appear at Tech Show Madrid on Thursday, November 5, for a session focused on artificial intelligence, customer needs and scalable technology solutions. The company is due to report second-quarter results on November 19, when investors will receive a clearer view of demand, margins and the effect of component costs on its business.
