Underground ramp-up remains central
Liontown's September-quarter update, published on October 28, said underground development at Kathleen Valley reached a record 4,021 metres. The company said the figure was 21 percent above the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026 and should support an increase in the annualized ore mining rate from about 1.6 million tonnes to about 1.9 million tonnes in the second quarter of fiscal 2027.
The update also outlined an approved expansion of Kathleen Valley. Liontown is targeting a five-year average of about 780,000 dry metric tonnes of spodumene concentrate from fiscal 2030, while the targeted average steady-state operating cost is set at 880 dollars per dry metric tonne.
Alongside the hard-rock operation, Liontown announced a staged farm-in to the Centenario lithium brine project in Argentina. The move gives the company an additional lithium development option, but it also adds another execution track for investors to monitor.
The September-quarter report recorded 77,982 dry metric tonnes of spodumene concentrate production and 82,561 dry metric tonnes sold across five parcels. Liontown said production should increase as underground mining accelerates and the operation transitions away from open-pit stockpiles.
For investors, the central issue is whether the underground ramp-up can deliver the planned production increase while the expansion advances. The company's targets offer a longer-term growth framework, but capital spending and operating performance remain important factors for future cash generation.
Broader sentiment can influence lithium producers through the S&P 500 market environment.
