- The Lichfield fashion hub is designed to add capacity to Marks & Spencer's 24-hour distribution network.
- The retailer is targeting higher online fashion, home and beauty sales through supply-chain investment.
Marks & Spencer has started recruiting for its new automated fashion distribution centre in Lichfield, with the hub scheduled to open next year. Retail Technology Innovation Hub reported on October 29 that more than 70 roles were available across management, operations and specialist functions.
The 437,000-square-foot facility is expected to employ 600 people when fully operational. It is intended to add capacity to Marks & Spencer's existing 24-hour distribution network and speed the movement of orders from suppliers to distribution centres, stores and direct customers.
Supply Chain Investment Supports Online Growth
Marks & Spencer is aiming to double online sales across fashion, home and beauty. The Lichfield project forms part of that supply-chain transformation, although the report does not quantify the facility's expected financial contribution.
David James, the company's supply chain and logistics director for Fashion, Home & Beauty, said the hub should help the retailer deliver fashion more quickly. Further hiring is planned as the launch approaches.
Marks & Spencer stock traded at 4.99 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 12:59 CET on Saturday, October 31. The quote is the latest available trading indication for the publication period and is not accompanied here by a verified Xetra closing comparison.
For investors, the project highlights the operational side of Marks & Spencer's online growth plans. Execution, hiring and the timing of the site's opening will determine how quickly the additional capacity can support sales.
