Mastercard has joined a 15 million US-dollar Series A funding round for Firmly, a no-code platform that helps merchants connect with AI shopping channels. Finextra reported that Squarepoint Capital led the round, which also included J.P. Morgan Payments and Samsung Next.
AI shopping adds a new growth layer
Firmly is also launching Ask Agent, a conversational shopping tool for merchant websites. The product combines natural-language product discovery with a real-time catalogue, in-chat checkout and customer support.
Firmly's Connect platform is designed to give merchants one no-code connection to AI assistants, publishers, social networks and other digital commerce channels. The company says the infrastructure can reach more than 11 million merchants representing more than 900 billion US dollars in gross merchandise volume.
Adoption remains the key test
For Mastercard, the investment extends a strategy that reaches beyond traditional card payments. The potential opportunity lies in connecting new merchant traffic with services such as fraud prevention, tokenization, cybersecurity and other value-added products.
The financial impact will depend on whether merchants and partners adopt the technology at scale. Usage figures, integrations and future management commentary would give investors a clearer indication of whether AI commerce is becoming a meaningful services channel.
