Cloud Growth Sets Strong Opening

Microsoft reported a strong start to fiscal 2027 on Wednesday, October 28, with results for the quarter ended September 30 exceeding management's expectations. In its fiscal first-quarter earnings release, Microsoft said revenue rose 19% year over year to USD 92.3 billion and operating income increased 21% to USD 45.9 billion.

GAAP net income climbed 32% to USD 36.6 billion, while diluted earnings per share reached USD 4.92, also up 32%. On an adjusted basis that excludes the impact of investments in OpenAI, net income increased 18% to USD 36.4 billion and diluted earnings per share rose 18% to USD 4.89. The adjustment matters because Microsoft's prior-year comparison included a much larger negative investment impact.

Azure Drives Cloud Momentum

Microsoft Cloud revenue grew 30% to USD 63.9 billion, accelerating from the previous fiscal year. Azure revenue increased 48%, and Microsoft reported that commercial remaining performance obligations rose 73% to USD 677 billion. The contracted-revenue figure gives investors a forward view of demand already secured across the company's cloud and software activities.

Agents and Infra revenue reached USD 76.8 billion, up 25%, and accounted for most of the quarter's sales. Microsoft 365 commercial cloud revenue increased 17% on a reported basis, while the company said the adjusted increase was 18% after normalizing for a one-point benefit from prior-year revenue recognition. Search and advertising revenue excluding traffic acquisition costs rose 12%.

Investment Keeps Pressure On Returns

Microsoft continues to commit substantial resources to infrastructure supporting cloud and artificial intelligence demand. Additions to property and equipment totaled USD 39.4 billion in the quarter, compared with USD 19.4 billion a year earlier. The company also returned USD 10.2 billion to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases.

The spending creates a trade-off for investors. Faster Azure growth and a larger contracted-revenue base can strengthen Microsoft's long-term position in cloud computing, but the returns depend on converting capacity and hardware investments into profitable usage. Devices and Consumer revenue fell 3% to USD 15.5 billion, showing that the growth profile remains concentrated in cloud and business software.

Microsoft stock traded at 470.05 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 11:39 CET on Friday, October 30, unchanged from the Xetra close of Thursday, October 29. The comparison uses the previous Xetra session because the German market was still trading before the 17:35 CET threshold.
