- Third-quarter sales growth accelerated across domestic and international markets.
- Higher aluminum, freight and marketing costs compressed profitability.
- The company continued product launches and share repurchases during the quarter.
Monster Beverage reported its third-quarter results for the period ended September 30 on Thursday, November 5, with sales growth strengthening across its core energy drink business and overseas markets. The company said in a Monster Beverage financial release that net sales reached 2.56 billion US dollars, up 16.7 percent from the year-earlier quarter.
International growth leads sales expansion
Sales outside the United States increased 28.1 percent to 1.20 billion US dollars and accounted for about 47 percent of total quarterly sales. The Monster Energy Drinks segment grew 17.1 percent to 2.37 billion US dollars, while Strategic Brands advanced 19.8 percent to 156.4 million US dollars.
Latin America was a major contributor, with sales rising 48.8 percent in dollars, according to Chief Executive Officer Hilton Schlosberg. New products across the Monster Energy, Java Monster, Mother and FLRT lines supported the company's push to broaden its consumer base.
Costs put pressure on profitability
Gross margin narrowed to 54.7 percent from 55.7 percent a year earlier as aluminum can costs, geographic mix and inbound freight expenses increased. Operating income still rose 6.4 percent to 718.7 million US dollars, while adjusted operating income increased 7.1 percent to 748.1 million US dollars.
Reported operating expenses included a 19.9 million US dollar property and equipment impairment charge and 14.7 million US dollars tied to digital transformation initiatives. Net income increased 8.4 percent to 568.4 million US dollars, or 0.29 US dollars per diluted share. Adjusted diluted earnings per share rose 8.5 percent to 0.30 US dollars.
Share repurchases continue
Monster Beverage repurchased about 2.3 million shares during the quarter for approximately 100.0 million US dollars at an average price of 43.87 US dollars. About 800.0 million US dollars remained available under authorized repurchase programs as of November 4.
