- Munich Re says clients increasingly seek support for complex, interconnected risks including data centres, cyber and energy transition assets.
- Abundant capacity is increasing competitive pressure, while the company remains selective when returns do not justify deploying capital.
- Final third-quarter results are due on November 12 after Munich Re raised its 2026 profit target in October.
Munich Re's renewal discussions are moving beyond price as insurers seek solutions for complex, interconnected risks, Insurance Asia reported on Thursday, November 5, 2026. Hitesh Kotak, Munich Re's chief executive for Japan, India, South Korea and Southeast Asia, said data centres, cyber risks and the energy transition were central themes in recent talks.
Kotak said the market remains more buyer-friendly because capital is available and reinsurers are more willing to deploy it. That is putting pressure on pricing, but he described the current conditions as a phase rather than a lasting shift in the reinsurance cycle. Munich Re is relying on selective underwriting and is prepared to wait where returns do not justify committing capacity.
The comments point to a more solution-oriented role for reinsurance. Kotak said clients are looking beyond volatility reduction toward growth financing, earnings smoothing and capital-allocation support. He also expects continuity in programme structures, with clients reluctant to make short-term changes during a softer market.
Complex risks create selective growth
Data-centre coverage remains largely facultative and focused on individual risks because many facilities are still under construction. Kotak said the industry does not yet have standardised solutions for the sector. Cyber insurance presents a different challenge, with distribution and the ability to support clients' broader business goals becoming more important than the product alone.
Munich Re also sees opportunities in construction, renewables, data centres and cyber business. Kotak said lower rates had not led clients to buy as much additional capacity or address underinsurance as the company had expected. He sees potential for stronger demand in the next cycle as Asia's exposure to natural catastrophes, digital infrastructure and energy-transition assets expands.
Munich Re's Investor Relations page describes a strategy focused on assessing, diversifying and managing risks while creating sustainable value. The renewal comments fit that approach, but the softer market means underwriting discipline remains important for future earnings quality.
