- Coverage applies to serial testing for early-stage liver cancer patients without evidence of disease after surgery.
- The supporting real-world study found earlier detection than imaging, with a median lead time of 7.9 months.
- Natera will publish third-quarter results after the market closes on November 5.
Natera said on Tuesday, November 3, that Medicare will cover serial Signatera molecular residual disease testing for patients with early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma who have no post-surgical evidence of disease. The company said the decision came through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' Molecular Diagnostics Services Program, or MolDX.
The coverage expands access to Natera's personalized blood test in a defined post-treatment surveillance setting. It does not replace imaging-based follow-up, but it gives physicians another tool for monitoring recurrence after surgery or other curative-intent treatment.
Study supports earlier recurrence signals
Natera said the coverage decision was supported by a real-world study of 125 patients published in JCO Precision Oncology. In that study, Signatera showed 83 percent sensitivity, compared with 42 percent for the standard biomarker alpha-fetoprotein, while specificity reached 100 percent.
The company also said Signatera detected recurrence signals up to 16.5 months ahead of imaging, with a median lead time of 7.9 months. AFP's median lead time was 2.2 months. Those findings support the commercial case for broader adoption, although the announcement does not quantify a revenue contribution from the new coverage.
Maen A. Abdelrahim, chief of GI medical oncology at Houston Methodist Cancer Center and an author of the supporting study, said conventional surveillance tools can miss early relapse signals and that Signatera helped clarify ambiguous scans. Adham Jurdi, Natera's senior medical director for GI and innovations in oncology medical affairs, called the coverage an access milestone for patients and physicians.
The announcement comes immediately before Natera's next earnings event. According to the Natera announcement, the company will release third-quarter results for the period ended September 30 after the market closes on Thursday, November 5, followed by a conference call at 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
Natera stock traded at 349.55 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 13:16 CET on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. Investors will assess whether the new coverage update is translating into broader test utilization when management discusses the quarterly figures and outlook.
