NextEra Energy stock gains a new growth angle as data-center demand lifts power needs. Management targets the high end of 2026 adjusted EPS guidance.

What the latest update means

  • NextEra Energy is positioning federally backed power hubs to serve expanding data-center electricity demand.
  • The fee-based structure limits near-term capital needs while projects move toward operations from 2028 onward.
  • Management continues to target the upper end of its 2026 adjusted earnings range.

NextEra Energy added 3.7 gigawatts of renewable-energy and battery-storage projects to its backlog in the third quarter, according to Reuters. The increase brought the backlog to about 36.7 gigawatts and added a fresh indicator of demand for power infrastructure linked to data centers.

Reuters reported on October 21 that NextEra Energy had signed agreements for three federally backed energy hubs in Texas and Pennsylvania with combined planned capacity of about 16.5 gigawatts. The company had secured USD 5.7 billion in initial funding, while the projects were expected to become operational as early as 2028 and 2029.

Fee model limits near-term capital needs

NextEra Energy plans to develop, build and operate the hubs for fees rather than fund the generation assets itself. The structure gives the company exposure to rising large-load demand without placing the project assets on its balance sheet, although the main earnings contribution is expected later as construction advances.

Guidance remains the next focus

NextEra Energy reported adjusted third-quarter earnings per share of USD 1.24, ahead of the USD 1.18 analyst estimate cited by Reuters. Management maintained its 2026 adjusted earnings outlook of USD 3.92 to USD 4.02 per share and continued to target the upper end of that range.

Management also expects the proposed USD 66.8 billion combination with Dominion Energy to close in the second half of 2027, subject to regulatory review. The S&P 500 remains the key broad market reference for US-listed utility investors; see current market coverage.
