NextEra Energy signed definitive agreements for three federally backed energy hubs on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, creating a new growth channel linked to rising electricity demand from data centers. Utility Dive reported that the projects have secured USD 5.7 billion in funding so far this year.

The three hubs span Texas and Pennsylvania and are expected to total 16.5 gigawatts of capacity. Two projects are backed by the Government of Japan and the U.S. Department of Commerce, while a third is backed by the Republic of Korea and the Commerce Department. The Korean-backed project includes 6.5 gigawatts of natural gas generation for a 5-gigawatt data center campus in Encinal, Texas, with its first phase potentially online as early as 2029.

Fee model limits capital exposure

NextEra Energy Resources expects to develop, build and operate the hubs for fees rather than invest its own capital in them. Chief Executive John Ketchum said the projects could generate at least half of the earnings the company would expect from owning and operating the facilities, while co-located battery storage could expand the opportunity.

The structure gives NextEra access to large-load growth while limiting the balance-sheet commitment normally associated with utility-scale generation. Utility Dive said an initial USD 3.3 billion released in August is intended for turbines and other long-lead equipment, with up to 10 gigawatts of gas-fired generation planned for two hubs targeted for completion in 2032.

Guidance remains at high end

Management continues to target the high end of its 2026 adjusted earnings-per-share range of USD 3.92 to USD 4.02. Early payments from the hubs are expected to remain modest in 2026 and 2027, with operating fees building toward 2032. That timing makes the projects more important as a longer-term earnings driver than as an immediate profit catalyst.
