- Nucor posted third-quarter net earnings of 1.32 billion US dollars and sales of 11.25 billion US dollars.
- Management expects fourth-quarter earnings to be generally in line with or modestly higher than the third quarter.
- New capacity in West Virginia and Berkeley is advancing the company's growth strategy.
Nucor Corporation delivered a stronger third quarter and kept its fourth-quarter earnings outlook broadly intact, according to the company's October 26 investor release. The steelmaker said net earnings attributable to stockholders reached 1.32 billion US dollars in the quarter ended October 3, compared with 1.16 billion US dollars in the second quarter and 607 million US dollars a year earlier. Diluted earnings per share rose to 5.80 US dollars from 5.04 US dollars sequentially and 2.63 US dollars in the year-earlier quarter.
Net sales increased to 11.25 billion US dollars from 10.40 billion US dollars in the second quarter and 8.52 billion US dollars a year earlier. EBITDA reached 2.28 billion US dollars, versus 2.02 billion US dollars in the previous quarter and 1.27 billion US dollars in the prior-year period. Nucor said higher average selling prices and increased volumes lifted earnings in its steel mills business, while the steel products segment benefited from higher volumes and pricing.
Pricing offsets seasonal volume pressure
Nucor expects fourth-quarter earnings to be generally in line with or modestly higher than the third quarter. The company sees stable earnings in both steel mills and steel products as higher realized prices offset seasonally lower volumes and higher costs. Raw-materials earnings are expected to decline slightly because of lower realized direct-reduced-iron pricing, while intersegment eliminations should decrease.
The outlook includes normal fourth-quarter pressures from fewer shipping days, holidays and planned outages. That makes pricing and cost control central to the near-term margin outlook, particularly as the company continues to absorb pre-operating and start-up costs tied to its expansion program.
