Nvidia stock faces a narrower China lead as export controls limit supply. The shift keeps domestic rivals central to the company's next growth debate.

China Competition Tests Nvidia

  • Nvidia held 34% of China's data-center AI-chip market in the first half of 2026.
  • Huawei's gains reflect export restrictions, domestic substitution and stronger non-GPU accelerator demand.
  • China's total AI-accelerator shipments are expected to grow 19% this year while GPU shipments decline.

Nvidia's position in China's data-center AI-chip market weakened in the first half of 2026 as export controls restricted supply and Huawei expanded its presence. Reuters reported on October 13 that an IDC report put Nvidia's share at 34%, while Huawei reached 28% of the overall market.

Reuters said Nvidia shipped 678,000 AI accelerators in China from January through June, down 44% from a year earlier. Huawei shipped 572,000 units, up from more than 300,000 a year earlier, narrowing Nvidia's lead in a market where Beijing is promoting domestic alternatives and requiring approval for compliant Nvidia imports.

China's Market Mix Is Changing

The shift extends beyond a direct Nvidia-Huawei contest. Total AI-accelerator shipments reached 2.008 million units in the first half, while GPU shipments fell 26% to 991,000 units. Other accelerators rose nearly 80% to 1.016 million units and overtook GPUs by volume.

Huawei, Alibaba's T-Head, Baidu's Kunlunxin and Cambricon together accounted for 95% of China's non-GPU segment, according to IDC figures reported by Reuters. IDC expects total accelerator shipments in China to grow 19% this year even as GPU shipments fall 9%, raising the importance of system-level performance and local supply chains.
