- Ottobock led Blue Arbor Technologies' 10.5 million US-dollar Series A financing.
- Funds will support feasibility work, U.S. clinical studies and development of an implantable sensing unit.
- RESTORE remains an investigational system and has not received commercial regulatory approval.
Blue Arbor Technologies closed a 10.5 million US-dollar Series A financing round on October 29, led by strategic partner Ottobock, according to BioSpace. The funding strengthens Ottobock's position in the development of advanced prosthetic-control technology, while the financial impact on current revenue is not specified.
Funding targets clinical development
Blue Arbor plans to use the proceeds to complete feasibility testing for its RESTORE Neuromuscular Interface System and pursue a U.S. Food and Drug Administration Investigational Device Exemption. The financing also supports U.S. clinical studies for the external sensing unit and the start of development for a fully implantable internal sensing unit.
RESTORE is designed to enable independent and simultaneous control of a prosthesis' fingers, wrist and elbow. Blue Arbor is developing both an external interface and an implantable version that connects the patient's peripheral nervous system with a robotic prosthetic limb.
Milestones remain investigational
Blue Arbor said two human implantations had been completed, including a second-in-human procedure using the external sensing unit at the Medical University of Vienna. The system has also been selected for a University of Michigan clinical study funded by a UG3 grant from the National Institutes of Health. That study will compare surface electrodes with implanted electrodes for prosthetic control.
RESTORE has received FDA Breakthrough Device Designation and entered the FDA's Total Product Life Cycle Advisory Program Pilot. Those milestones support the development path but do not constitute commercial approval. Blue Arbor states that the system remains investigational and is not approved or cleared for commercial distribution.
