Panasonic Holdings raised its full-year operating-profit outlook on Friday, October 30, after its energy unit delivered a sharp increase in second-quarter earnings. Reuters reported that the battery business benefited from stronger sales of in-vehicle batteries and energy-storage systems for data centers.

The energy unit generated operating profit of JPY 55.6 billion in the second quarter, compared with JPY 1.2 billion a year earlier. Panasonic said higher electric-vehicle battery sales in North America and demand for data-center storage systems supported the result.

Panasonic also raised the energy unit's full-year operating-profit forecast for the year ending March 2027 by 16 percent, from JPY 171 billion to JPY 198 billion. The company said demand from strategic customers for in-vehicle batteries continued to significantly outperform the overall market.

At group level, Panasonic lifted its full-year operating-profit forecast by JPY 120 billion, or 20 percent, to JPY 710 billion. Reuters linked part of the increase to stronger-than-expected growth in AI-related businesses. The figures point to a broader earnings contribution from battery demand and AI infrastructure, rather than relying solely on the electric-vehicle market.

Battery growth broadens earnings drivers

The energy division remains central to Panasonic's investment case because it connects automotive batteries with stationary storage. The latest forecast change indicates that data-center demand is becoming an additional earnings driver as electricity infrastructure expands around AI computing.

For investors, the upgraded guidance improves the earnings outlook for the fiscal year ending in March 2027. It also raises the importance of execution in North American battery operations and the company's ability to convert strategic-customer demand into sustainable margins. Reuters did not report a new dividend decision or a separate timetable for the next update.
