PepsiCo stock faces margin test after 2026 profit outlook cut

PepsiCo stock faces a tougher profit path after stronger quarterly sales failed to protect the full-year earnings outlook. North America remains the pressure point.

Growth meets margin pressure

  • Third-quarter net revenue rose 5.6 percent to 25.274 billion US dollars, while core EPS increased 2 percent to 2.34 US dollars.
  • PepsiCo cited North American execution, higher input costs and investment needs as key issues for the remaining fiscal year.
  • Management still expects approximately 6 percent full-year net revenue growth and plans 8.9 billion US dollars in shareholder returns.

PepsiCo reported stronger third-quarter sales on October 8, 2026, but lowered its full-year profit outlook as pressure in North America continued to weigh on margins. In its filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the company said net revenue increased 5.6 percent year over year to 25.274 billion US dollars for the 12 weeks ended September 5.

Core earnings per share rose 2 percent to 2.34 US dollars, while reported diluted EPS increased 17 percent to 2.23 US dollars. Core operating profit advanced 3 percent to 4.277 billion US dollars, but core operating margin contracted by 35 basis points to 16.9 percent. PepsiCo said tariff refunds contributed four percentage points to core operating profit growth, an effect investors must distinguish from recurring operating progress.

North America remains the test

The company said international businesses performed well, with organic revenue growth across the group reaching 3.1 percent. International beverages, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Latin America Foods and Asia Pacific Foods all benefited from organic volume growth, while North American execution remained uneven.

PepsiCo's North American beverage business recorded a 2 percent volume decline in the quarter. Convenient foods showed improved sequential trends, including savory snacks volume growth and better volume market share, but lower effective net pricing offset part of the improvement. Management also pointed to higher operating costs and increased advertising and marketing expenses.

Chief Executive Ramon Laguarta said PepsiCo would invest more in innovation, brand building and marketplace execution to improve North American performance. He also said the company was identifying additional structural cost reductions to help fund those investments and offset rising input-cost inflation.

Lower profit, higher sales outlook

PepsiCo now expects fiscal 2026 core EPS growth of 2.5 percent to 3.5 percent, compared with the previous outlook at the low end of a 5 percent to 7 percent range. Core constant-currency EPS growth is expected at 1 percent to 2 percent, down from the low end of the former 4 percent to 6 percent range.

The revenue outlook moved in the opposite direction. PepsiCo raised its forecast for net revenue growth to approximately 6 percent from a prior range of 4 percent to 6 percent, while organic revenue growth is expected at approximately 3 percent, compared with the previous range of 2 percent to 4 percent. The contrast underlines the central issue for the company: sales growth is not yet translating into comparable profit momentum.

PepsiCo continues to expect 8.9 billion US dollars in cash returns to shareholders for 2026, comprising 7.9 billion US dollars of dividends and 1 billion US dollars of share repurchases. For investors, the next test is whether North American volume and margin trends improve while international growth continues to offset weaker domestic execution.
