Pfizer stock gains as ELREXFIO win strengthens oncology case

- ELREXFIO met the primary endpoint in a Phase 3 multiple-myeloma trial.
- The FDA expanded TALZENNA plus XTANDI into an earlier prostate-cancer treatment setting.
- Analysts still see pricing pressure, pipeline execution and declining COVID revenue as key risks.
Pfizer Inc. reported a positive Phase 3 outcome for its multiple-myeloma medicine ELREXFIO, while the U.S. Food and Drug Administration expanded the approved use of TALZENNA plus XTANDI in prostate cancer. The developments strengthen Pfizer's effort to shift its earnings mix toward oncology as COVID-related revenue declines.
Yahoo Finance reported on Friday, October 30, that the MagnetisMM-32 trial of ELREXFIO met its primary endpoint in patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma. The result supports the commercial case for a marketed medicine by adding evidence for use in a difficult-to-treat cancer setting.
Oncology portfolio gains breadth
The FDA also expanded approval of TALZENNA plus XTANDI for men with metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer whose tumors have homologous recombination repair gene mutations. The decision gives Pfizer an additional use for an existing combination rather than requiring the company to build growth around entirely new products.
For investors, the two developments point in the same strategic direction. Pfizer is seeking to replace part of the revenue lost from its COVID franchise with oncology, obesity and vaccine products, while cost savings support profitability. Wider indications can increase the opportunity for existing medicines, but commercial value will depend on uptake, pricing and reimbursement.
Yahoo Finance highlighted that the progress does not remove Pfizer's broader risks. Pricing pressure, pipeline execution, high debt, thinner margins and potential one-off write-downs remain factors that can affect earnings even when clinical and regulatory milestones are favorable.
Forecasts imply a demanding transition
The analysis cited a consensus scenario in which revenue declines by 5.2 percent a year over the following three years, while profit margins rise from 6.8 percent to 16.8 percent. Analysts in that scenario see profit increasing from USD 4.3 billion to USD 9.1 billion by 2029 despite the lower revenue base.
That outlook places considerable weight on productivity measures and the contribution from oncology, obesity and other pipeline programs. A successful ELREXFIO launch and broader TALZENNA plus XTANDI use would support the investment case, but neither milestone by itself removes the risk from patent expirations or weaker COVID demand.
