Sales Growth Meets Margin Pressure

  • Fiscal first-quarter net sales rose 4% to 23.276 billion US dollars, while core EPS increased 1% to 2.00 US dollars.
  • Organic sales advanced 4%, led by volume growth and favorable product mix across the portfolio.
  • Management maintained its organic sales and core EPS outlook despite a projected 1.4 billion US dollar after-tax commodity cost headwind.

Procter & Gamble reported stronger sales and earnings for the first quarter of fiscal 2027 on October 22, while warning that higher commodity, energy and transportation costs will weigh more heavily on profitability later in the year. The company said in its earnings release that net sales rose 4% year over year to 23.276 billion US dollars for the three months ended September 30. Organic sales also increased 4%.

The real-time quote of Procter & Gamble stock was 146.62 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 12:40 CEST on Friday, October 30, 2.93 percent above the Xetra close of Thursday at 142.44 euros.

Volume Supports First-Quarter Sales

Sales growth was broad-based. Beauty generated 5.4% organic growth, Grooming 4.5%, Health Care 2.7%, Fabric and Home Care 4.8%, and Baby, Feminine and Family Care 3.0%. Across the company, volume contributed 2.4 percentage points to organic growth, favorable mix added 1.1 points and pricing contributed 0.4 points.

Management said the quarter's performance reflected stronger execution of its strategy. Chief Executive Officer Shailesh Jejurikar said the company remained on track to deliver within its fiscal-year ranges despite continuing geopolitical and economic challenges. The result also showed that volume recovery and portfolio mix can support sales while pricing makes a smaller contribution.

Costs Weigh On Margins

Profit growth was more limited than sales growth. Diluted earnings per share increased 1% to 1.97 US dollars, while core EPS, which excludes incremental restructuring charges, rose 1% to 2.00 US dollars. Operating cash flow reached 5.767 billion US dollars, and P&G returned 3.9 billion US dollars to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases.

Reported gross margin fell 160 basis points from the prior-year quarter. Core gross margin declined 150 basis points, as higher commodity costs and product reinvestments each reduced the margin by 140 basis points. Unfavorable mix also hurt, while productivity savings, lower tariff costs and pricing provided partial offsets. Core operating margin fell 80 basis points.

The company expects the pressure to intensify. P&G now estimates an after-tax commodity cost headwind of 1.4 billion US dollars for fiscal 2027, driven by raw materials, energy and transportation. Higher net interest expense, lower non-operating income and unfavorable foreign exchange are expected to create additional headwinds. Together, these factors amount to 0.79 US dollars per share and an 11% drag on core EPS growth, according to the company.

Guidance Holds After Thorne Deal

P&G maintained its organic sales growth outlook of 1% to 3% for fiscal 2027, including a 30 to 50 basis point headwind from brand, product form and go-to-market discontinuations. It updated all-in sales growth guidance to 2% to 4% after the Thorne acquisition became effective on October 1.

The company also kept its diluted EPS growth forecast at 1% to 5% and its core EPS growth range at flat to 3%. That corresponds to a core EPS range of 6.89 to 7.11 US dollars, with a midpoint of 7.00 US dollars. P&G expects free cash flow productivity of 85% to 90%, more than 10 billion US dollars in dividend payments and approximately 5 billion US dollars in share repurchases during the fiscal year.
