Randstad said on October 29 that artificial intelligence is changing rather than eliminating demand for technology professionals, with 86 percent of surveyed organizations planning to expand their tech headcount. The staffing group's tech talent report points to a widening gap between the skills employers need and the talent available.

Randstad's research found that job postings requiring AI capabilities increased more than fivefold over the previous year. The report covered 11 markets and combined 1,100 interviews with an analysis of more than 20 million job postings and approximately 100 million candidate profiles.

Employers compete for scarce skills

The competition for software talent is spreading beyond the technology sector. Randstad said banks pay software engineers a median 13 percent premium over technology companies, while healthcare and life sciences employers pay up to 17 percent more. In addition, 55 percent of non-technology organizations surveyed said they were recruiting people affected by technology-sector layoffs.

Randstad also identified a shift from purely technical skills toward AI orchestration, communication and risk governance. Some 61 percent of employers said human capabilities such as critical thinking and stakeholder communication were harder to source than technical skills. Demand for risk-governance expertise doubled, rising 108 percent, while the available talent pool increased 69 percent.

Flexible models support expansion

The findings support Randstad's strategy of combining traditional staffing with digital marketplaces and flexible talent models. Contingent, freelance, contract and fractional workers were the first-choice response to AI skills gaps for 63 percent of organizations surveyed. Digital talent marketplaces were used by 92 percent of organizations, with 42 percent relying on them as their primary recruitment channel.

Randstad CEO Sander van 't Noordende said employers need people who can put AI to work immediately while also exercising judgment, communication and governance. He argued that companies will need to buy foundational talent, borrow specialist skills and build capabilities internally rather than rely on a single hiring model.

For investors, the report highlights a structural opportunity for recruitment platforms and specialist staffing services, but also raises execution demands. Randstad must convert stronger demand for scarce skills into profitable placements while scaling digital tools and maintaining access to a broad talent pool. The report said women represented 31 percent of professionals with emerging AI skills, underscoring a further workforce constraint.
