- Elsevier is combining subscription publishing, research analytics and decision-support tools to deepen its position in scientific and healthcare workflows.
- RELX is expanding LeapSpace and Sherpath AI while focusing on traceable outputs, customer adoption and operating efficiency.
- Management sees artificial intelligence as a source of higher productivity and demand for evidence-based information.
RELX highlighted the growth potential of its Scientific, Technical & Medical division at an investor seminar on Tuesday, November 3, with artificial intelligence at the center of its product strategy. Elsevier Chief Executive Kumsal Bayazit said the division has lifted its revenue growth rate to 6% from the 2% to 4% range discussed at the previous seminar, according to MarketBeat.
STM represented 28% of RELX revenue and 30% of adjusted operating profit in the first half of 2026. Nearly 80% of the division's revenue comes from subscriptions, mainly through multiyear contracts. Primary Research contributes slightly more than half of revenue, while Decision Support Tools account for about 40%.
Elsevier scales research technology
LeapSpace, Elsevier's AI-enabled research workspace, combines full-text content, Scopus information, funding data and customer materials. Its features include Trust Cards linking findings to source passages and Claim Radar, which identifies evidence supporting, contradicting or producing mixed results around a claim.
Nearly 1,000 institutional customers have subscribed to LeapSpace, and more than 1 million users have engaged with at least one feature. In a user survey, 97% reported saving time, while more than half said they saved more than 50% of their time. The product remains small relative to Elsevier's overall revenue, making continued adoption and monetization important milestones for investors.
In healthcare education, Sherpath AI reached 100,000 students in 2026, equivalent to 20% of US nursing students, according to the seminar account. The platform combines Elsevier nursing content, adaptive questions, predictive analytics and AI-supported study tools. RELX said it aims to expand customer adoption across its modular product suite rather than rely on price increases.
Publishing scale supports the model
Elsevier receives 4.2 million article submissions annually and published more than 800,000 articles in 2025. Fewer than 20% of submissions are accepted, reflecting the company's emphasis on editorial quality and research integrity as artificial intelligence increases both productivity and the risk of fabricated or low-quality manuscripts.
The company also said it uses more than 120 approved AI models from providers including Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and Mistral. Its technology strategy combines scientific content, extracted information, taxonomies and knowledge graphs to make AI outputs more traceable. Elsevier said it does not use customer data to train its models, while optimization reduced Sherpath AI token costs by nearly 50% during the year as usage increased.
