Rio Tinto has approved USD 144 million to advance the next development phase of the Resolution Copper project near Superior, Arizona, according to a Yahoo Finance report published Friday, November 6, 2026. Rio Tinto's share of the funding is USD 79 million.

Resolution Copper Mining, the project operator, is owned 55% by Rio Tinto and 45% by BHP. The new spending will fund feasibility studies and final design engineering for material-handling systems in two shafts, as well as new water-treatment facilities.

Funding Targets Project Preparation

The package also covers exploration drilling, underground development and production equipment, and long-lead electrical equipment. About 50 new positions are expected in mining, geology, engineering and project services as the project moves through its next phase.

The decision follows a land exchange completed in March 2026. Rio Tinto had announced about USD 500 million in preliminary spending for Resolution Copper at that time, making the latest approval a further step toward development rather than a final production decision.

Resolution Copper is a joint venture project with a deposit located between 5,000 and 7,000 feet underground. Rio Tinto copper chief executive Katie Jackson said the project could supply up to 25% of US copper demand for decades and strengthen domestic supply chains. The company also expects the project to support economic activity and employment in Arizona.

Copper Growth Meets Execution Risk

The project adds a long-term copper growth option to Rio Tinto's portfolio, but the funding does not establish a production start date or confirm a final investment decision. For investors, the next milestones are the feasibility work, engineering progress, underground development and the eventual decision on full project construction.
