- The bank cites security, privacy and the risks of increasingly autonomous software that may access financial accounts.
- Customers can continue using RBC's website, mobile app and proprietary digital tools.
Royal Bank of Canada said on October 28 that it is blocking third-party personal AI agents from direct access to authenticated RBC digital properties, including online banking. In its RBC News & Stories article, the bank said the decision followed consideration of the risks created by more autonomous software.
RBC said personal AI agents may need access to online accounts and may store passwords to perform tasks. The bank linked its decision to potential fraud, consumer harm and broader financial-system risks, while emphasizing that security and privacy remain central to its client relationship.
Direct Access Ends, Banking Continues
The restriction applies to third-party agents trying to reach authenticated RBC services, not to artificial intelligence generally. Customers can continue to access digital banking through the official website and mobile app, use RBC's own digital tools and contact customer service.
RBC also pointed customers to its Digital Banking Security Guarantee. The guarantee covers eligible unauthorized digital transactions subject to the bank's stated conditions and customer responsibilities, including requirements concerning passwords, suspicious activity and the use of digital services.
For investors, the move places the bank on the restrictive side of an emerging debate over how autonomous software should interact with financial accounts. It may reduce near-term third-party access risks, but it also highlights the importance of secure authorization systems if banks later support controlled forms of agent-assisted finance. The announcement does not by itself establish a change to RBC's broader investment in internal artificial intelligence and digital services.
