- Adjusted earnings nearly doubled year on year in the third quarter, supported by strong refining performance.
- Shell raised its planned buyback to 5 billion US dollars for the next three months.
- Management plans to present further strategic progress with fourth-quarter results on February 4, 2027.
Shell reported a strong third quarter on October 29, 2026, with adjusted earnings of 10.8 billion US dollars and operating cash flow of 21 billion US dollars. The figures were presented on Shell's official quarterly results page.
Shell said the result reflected strong operational performance in a volatile commodity environment. Its Products business delivered record results from refining, while refinery utilisation exceeded 100 percent when Rheinland was excluded because low Rhine water levels affected the site.
Buyback rises as cash flow strengthens
The company announced a further 5 billion US dollar share buyback programme, which it expects to complete by the release of its fourth-quarter results. Shell's distribution policy remains 40 to 50 percent of cash flow from operations through the cycle. Management also said the progressive dividend remains a key priority, with dividend per share up 9 percent over the previous 12 months.
The capital-return decision came alongside portfolio changes. Shell completed the acquisition of ARC Resources in September, strengthening its Canadian natural gas position and adding 370,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day of production. The company also took the final investment decision on the second phase of LNG Canada, which is expected to double liquefaction capacity at the facility and add nearly 6 million tonnes of annual LNG volumes for Shell.
Lower capital spending outlook
Shell set its 2026 cash capital expenditure range at 23 billion to 25 billion US dollars, including about 4 billion US dollars for the ARC Resources acquisition. Management said net debt had fallen by 6 billion US dollars since the end of 2025, while gearing stood at 17 percent at the end of the third quarter, or below 3 percent excluding leases.
Shell stock traded at 46.52 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 11:46 CET on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. Investors can follow the real-time quote of Shell stock.
Shell's operating performance and larger buyback improve the near-term capital-return profile, but refining conditions and energy-market volatility remain important variables for future earnings. The planned increase in LNG capacity and the ARC acquisition provide longer-term growth support, while the unusually strong refining contribution sets a demanding comparison for subsequent quarters.
