Shell plc reported a strong third quarter on October 29, with adjusted earnings of 10.8 billion US dollars and operating cash flow of 21 billion US dollars. The company said record refining margins and strong operational execution supported the result.
The Shell quarterly results presentation said the indicative refining margin rose to 42 US dollars per barrel in the third quarter from 24 US dollars in the second quarter. Chemicals and Products generated adjusted earnings of 3.9 billion US dollars, compared with 2.9 billion US dollars in the previous quarter.
Higher cash returns and investment
Shell announced a further 5 billion US dollar share buyback programme for the next three months, which it expects to complete by the announcement of fourth-quarter results. The company said its policy of distributing 40% to 50% of operating cash flow through the cycle remains unchanged.
Management also reduced the 2026 cash capital expenditure range to 23 billion to 25 billion US dollars, including the ARC Resources acquisition. Shell said the acquisition strengthens its Canadian position and adds 370,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day of production.
Shell expects to provide a further strategic update together with its fourth-quarter 2026 results on February 4, 2027. For investors, the next focus is whether elevated refining conditions and strong cash generation can persist beyond the current quarter.
