  • Management expects demand to remain soft and uneven across most end markets in 2027.

Sherwin-Williams is preparing for another year of uneven demand while expanding its efficiency program. On the company's October 27 earnings call, Chief Executive Officer Heidi Petz said management expects approximately 75 million US dollars in cost savings during 2027. The comments came as the company narrowed its 2026 adjusted earnings outlook and acknowledged that sales-to-earnings conversion remained below its standards. The Yahoo Finance transcript carries the management remarks.

Management prepares for weaker demand

Petz said Sherwin-Williams expects a continuation of softer demand for longer, with choppy conditions across most end markets in 2027. Management sees few positive catalysts in its leading indicators and is therefore building its planning assumptions without relying on a broad economic recovery.

The company still plans targeted investments in stores, sales representatives, services and new products. In the Paint Stores Group, third-quarter sales grew by a mid-single-digit percentage, while volume increased by a low-single-digit percentage. Sherwin-Williams said new residential sales also rose by a low-single-digit percentage even as single-family completions declined by a high-single-digit percentage in the quarter.

Cost pressure keeps margins in focus

Higher raw-material and supply-chain costs, the integration of the Suvinil acquisition and higher service costs weighed on profitability. Adjusted diluted earnings per share increased by approximately 1% in the third quarter, while adjusted EBITDA rose 3.3% to 1.4 billion US dollars. Adjusted EBITDA margin was 20.5%.

Actions taken in the second and third quarters are expected to generate approximately 25 million US dollars of savings in 2026. The 2027 target includes those restructuring benefits and additional measures under review for the fourth quarter. Management also expects raw-material inflation in the low- to mid-single-digit range next year, with the largest year-over-year impact in the first half.

Pricing remains a central lever

Sherwin-Williams said the 8% price increase introduced in its Paint Stores Group on September 1 is tracking as planned and should reach its historical realization range in the first half of 2027. Chief Financial Officer Ben Meisenzahl said the company would continue to pace pricing according to its cost basket rather than rely on a single broad increase.

The approach is intended to balance customer retention, volume and margin protection. Management said the timing of price-cost realization remains the main issue, rather than a lack of pricing power. The company expects its typical range of 80 to 100 net new stores to resume in 2027 after opening 57 gross new stores year to date.

What investors should watch next

Sherwin-Williams narrowed its 2026 adjusted diluted earnings-per-share outlook to 11.85 to 12.15 US dollars while keeping the prior midpoint unchanged at 12 US dollars. Management plans to provide a more detailed 2027 outlook during the January earnings call, making demand trends, raw-material inflation and the delivery of planned savings the main near-term focus.
