- Societe Generale reported record third-quarter and nine-month earnings on October 29.
- Nine-month profitability and efficiency metrics moved above the bank's 2026 targets.
- The completed buyback leaves investors focused on revenue momentum and risk costs into the final quarter.
Societe Generale reported record third-quarter and nine-month earnings on Thursday, October 29, 2026, according to its results release as covered by AD HOC NEWS. A newly relevant capital detail is the completion of the extraordinary EUR 1.5 billion share buyback on September 30.
Record earnings improve operating leverage
Group net income reached EUR 1.888 billion in the three months to September 30, up 24.1 percent from the year-earlier quarter. Net banking income rose 7.8 percent to EUR 7.173 billion, while operating expenses increased 0.8 percent to EUR 4.093 billion.
The cost-to-income ratio improved to 57.1 percent from 61.0 percent a year earlier. Return on tangible equity reached 13.0 percent, compared with 10.7 percent in the third quarter of 2025, while the net cost of risk rose to EUR 408 million, or 28 basis points.
Nine-month targets move within reach
For the first nine months of 2026, group net income increased 17.3 percent to EUR 5.374 billion. Revenue rose 4.1 percent to EUR 21.375 billion, and operating expenses declined 3.2 percent, reducing the cost-to-income ratio to 58.8 percent.
Nine-month ROTE reached 12.3 percent, above the full-year target of around 11 percent. Revenue growth was also ahead of the bank's 2026 objective of more than 2 percent. The figures point to stronger operating leverage, although credit costs and capital-markets activity remain important variables for final-quarter performance.
Buyback leaves capital buffer
The completed buyback reduced excess capital available for distribution, while the common equity tier one ratio stood at 13.4 percent at the end of the quarter. Investors will now watch whether revenue momentum and cost discipline continue while risk costs remain within the planned range.
