- Third-quarter revenue growth outpaced the rise in costs, improving operating leverage.
- Nine-month profitability exceeded the bank's 2026 target while capital stayed above regulatory requirements.
- The completed extraordinary buyback adds to the shareholder-return case, subject to future capital decisions.
Societe Generale reported record earnings for the third quarter and first nine months of 2026 in a release published on October 29. The French lender's stock traded at 64.92 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 11:21 CET on Thursday, November 5, 1.63 percent above the Xetra close of Wednesday, November 4.
The bank's official results release said Group net income reached EUR 1.9 billion in the quarter, while return on tangible equity rose to 13.0 percent from 10.7 percent a year earlier. Revenue increased 7.8 percent, compared with a 0.8 percent rise in costs, helping reduce the quarterly cost-to-income ratio to 57.1 percent.
Profitability Moves Above 2026 Target
For the first nine months, Group net income climbed 17.3 percent to EUR 5.4 billion. Revenue rose 4.1 percent to EUR 21.4 billion, while costs fell 3.2 percent. The resulting 12.3 percent ROTE exceeded the bank's 2026 target of about 11 percent and put Societe Generale on track to surpass its revenue-growth objective of more than 2 percent.
Management linked the performance to growth across the business, operational efficiency, risk management and capital generation. Chief Executive Slawomir Krupa said the group would continue executing its profitable growth strategy to pursue its 2029 targets. The nine-month cost of risk was 27 basis points, within the 2026 guidance range of 25 to 30 basis points.
Capital Returns Remain In Focus
Societe Generale completed an extraordinary EUR 1.5 billion share buyback on September 30. The CET1 ratio stood at 13.4 percent at the end of the quarter, around 320 basis points above the regulatory requirement. That combination gives investors a stronger capital backdrop, although future distributions will still depend on earnings, capital needs and board decisions.
The earnings mix was not uniform. Stronger revenue from French retail banking and Global Banking and Investor Solutions supported the quarter, while other business areas faced different operating trends. For investors, the key development is the combination of higher returns, positive operating leverage and capital resilience rather than any single quarterly figure.
At the current quote, the real-time quote of Societe Generale stock reflects the latest Lang & Schwarz indication. The next material catalyst is the bank's subsequent financial update, when investors can assess whether the stronger profitability and capital position are being sustained.
Societe Generale operates in the French market, where the CAC 40 provides the broader equity-market backdrop.
